Thompson says she may play abroad rather than in WNBA
HOUSTON -- Six-time WNBA All-Star Tina Thompson told a Houston television station that she's seriously considering leaving the Houston Comets at the end of the season, but said before a game Tuesday night that she wasn't close to making a decision.
Thompson told KRIV-TV that playing in the WNBA is not financially feasible for her anymore and playing overseas was "a strong possibility." Thompson has played professionally in Italy and Korea.
"I have played in this league for 11 years and I am not getting any younger," she told KRIV. "I am 32 years old and I have a 2-year-old son. So my focus is to make the best of my last years playing basketball."
Just before the Comets played New York, Thompson downplayed any talk of leaving. "It's not even an issue at this moment," she said.
Thompson said she had not discussed her playing future with her teammates or anyone else. She reiterated, though, what she told KRIV, that she is currently "70 percent" leaning toward leaving the Comets.
"So, at this point, I have a 2-year old son and I am making decisions that are feasible for my future," she said. "And that is physically, emotionally and economically. It has a lot of factors."
