Safsal's women's 05/06 awards
Lior Klinger ,03/25/2006
Keeping up our tradition, 'Safsal' brings you our season awards for the 05/06 season in women's basketball. After settling a lot of differences in opinion and sleepless nights of deliberations, we reached some un-surprising conclusions. The complete list of winners - inside!

Forget the numbers. When we voted Deanna Nolan as the 05/06 MVP we didn't need any stat sheet. Nolan just might be the best player to ever set foot in our league, 1st team All WNBA, who are we to argue. Despite her amazing personal ability which enables her to score whenever she decides too, Nolan is the ultimate team player. She leads Ramat Hasharon in assists and is ranked 5th in the entire league with 3.9 assists per game. She only took 20 or more shots in a game once all season, she knows how to turn it up against the top teams, and she's definitely the best defender in the league. Tweety was a joy all season, fun to watch and fun to interview, and we miss her already.

First Team
Deanna Nolan of course, and…

Obrazek

Brandi McCain, all 5'3 of her, is the number one scorer and passer in our WNBA filled league. McCain led Ashdod to a respectable season that with a little less bad luck could've continued into the upper playoffs, and she was the most efficient point guard in the league.

Obrazek

Other than Deanna Nolan, Tamara Moore is the only player in the league to average over 15 points, six rebounds and three assists per game. She's 2nd only to McCain in points per game among guards (20.3) and leads all guards in rebounds per game (6.7). She gets to the line over 7 times per game and leads the league. She knows when to get others involves, when to take more on herself, and just knows how to win games.

Obrazek

She's not athletic like Nolan, not as strong as Ford, but she's the most efficient player in the league. The numbers show Willingham is #1 in 2pt FG% (66.5%), 2nd in points per game (21.5) and adds 9.8 boards per game, but she's about a lot more than stats. Her winner's attitude, determination and the way she quietly gets the job done every night is what brought Motzkin to 2nd place.

Obrazek

Ford went through an adjustment period early in the season but since she started to feel at home, Anda Ramat Hasharon started looking a little untouchable. Her 17.9 points and 11.0 rebounds (2nd in league) per game don't reflect her dominance under the baskets.

Obrazek

Canty was a symbol of consistency for Hapoel Tel Aviv in a trouble filled season. With 16.4 points per game on 52.2% from inside the arc, 4.9 rebounds per game and 3.0 assists per game, Canty was Hapoel's leader. In the last four games she stepped up her numbers to 19.0 and 7.2 boards per game as Hapoel made their playoff run.

Second Team

Obrazek

The only bright spot in Bnei Yehuda's season with 14.3 points per game on good shooting, and 3.4 assists per game. Grinboym was marked as Bnei Yehuda's top Israeli from day one, and as the season progressed and the problems pilled up, she took more on herself and led a short handed team to the upper playoffs.

Obrazek

Coker was the surprise of the season in the first round, and spent most of the season ranked 1st in points and rebounds per game. Her disappointing last month pushed her down to 3rd in points with 21.2 per game and 2nd in rebounding with 11.0 per game. Coker is also 2nd in the league in steals per game with 2.6 per game.

Obrazek

Ever since Jackson arrived at Ramat Hen they look like they can beat anybody. The versatile lefty forward fit in quickly and became the team's best option offensively. Her numbers are great with 20.3 points on great shooting and 7.3 boards per game, her long arms and quickness cause a lot of problems for the opponent defensively, and had she been here all year she'd probably be on the 1st team.

Obrazek

Hall finished a great season with 20.1 points per game – career best in Israel, and of course picked up her 5th rebounding title with 12.0 per night. Ramat Hen's leader continues to justify the "Ms. Double Double" nickname with 14 double doubles in 18 games, and we really don't know how we let her slip down to 2nd team.

Coach of the year

Obrazek

A Player's coach
The easies choice in this year's awards was coach of the year. Adan Inbar, in his calm style, led Hapoel Haifa Motzkin to a wonderful season with a 16 – 5 record and 2nd place in the league. Haifa Motzkin was the best show in town, a well oiled offensive machine of nearly 87.0 points per game. We enjoyed watching his team play, and his team enjoyed winning for him.

Defensive player of the year

Obrazek

They say the big stars don’t like playing defense, but in Nolan's case that couldn't be further from the truth. Her amazing athletic ability that everyone marvels at offensively serves her just as well on the defensive side, though most people don’t pay attention to it. Anyone claiming Nolan doesn't go all out all the time probably isn’t looking at the defensive side, and we doubt you'll find one guard in the league that'll argue with this pick.

Israeli of the year

Obrazek

Rivi Grinboym was the most significant Israeli this year minute wise, finished as the leader scorer among Israelis with 14.3 points per game (8th among all guards), 7th in the league and 2nd among Israelis with 3.4 assists per game and even ranked 10th in the league in 2pt FG% with 53.9% - 2nd among Israelis and 3rd among guards.
Other nominees for the award were Taly Noy who became a starter and is in large part responsible for Hapoel's successful late playoff charge, and Shiri Sharon who led Ramat Hen to an excellent season as the only point guard.

Break out player of the year

Obrazek

This award is not reserves for kids, but for an Israeli player who made a big jump. Inbar Vaksman played in DII in the last two years and decided to move to Maccabi Ashdod this season. They didn't expect her to finish as the 4th best Israeli scorer, and neither did we. Vaksman scored 9.6 points per game on 45.0% shooting from 2 point range and 47.8% from downtown – 2nd in the league.

6th woman of the year

Obrazek

Tamar Maoz went back to Ramat Hasharon's bench this season after a year in Raanana Hertzelia's starting lineup, and it turns out she knew what she was doing. Maoz provided Ramat Hasharon with whatever they needed, whether it's important threes, responsible play making, or just experience. She's ranked 4th in the league in 3pt% with 45.0% and scores 6.3 points per night.

Disappointment of the year

Let's start eliminating the excuses one by one. Chelsea Newton was not who Tal Natan was building on all summer, she came in as a last minute savior. Hapoel Tel Aviv & Ramat Hen who lost in Raanana in the early rounds got significantly better since those games. That same Raanana team with Newton lost in Ashdod in round 9. The point is that the 7 – 2 record they had in Newton's days was a little deceiving. Raanana Hertzelia was a good team but not a 2nd place team in the long run, not with one post.

The conclusion is that the decision to bring in Shameka Christon was a good one, but the execution was all wrong. Tal Natan insisted on playing Christon 24 hours after she landed in Israel, and he watched from the bench along side Newton as his team looked lost in a game that ended up costing them the ticket to the playoff semis. In fact you can say that other than a spark of brilliance here and there, Raanana Hertzelia never really got it going on all cylinders. The playbook from the Newton days barely changed, there was no hierarchy, and it just wasn't working.

Raanana Hertzelia started the upper playoffs ranked up there in 3rd place and lost four straight, and in between them got knocked out of the Cup Semis by an Amber-less Ramat Hen squad. Tal Natan couldn’t find a way to stop the snowball effect, and each week we saw his team repeating the same mistakes. There was no shortage of talent on this team compared to what other coaches have to work with, but Raanana Hertzelia's staff failed to get this team to fulfill half of its potential. We won't finish without saying that Raanana Hertzelia's Israeli crew finished 8th in the league in minutes and points per game, and it wasn't cause they're short on National Team players.

Underrated player of the year

Obrazek

Anda Ramat Hasharon's intelligent center is a little hidden in the shadows of Deanna Nolan, Cheryl Ford and even Bess Greenberg sometimes, but Ujhelyi is Anda's glue. She leads the league in assist to turnover ratio which is very rare for a post. When Ujhelyi's in the game Anda's offense flows a lot better, thanks to her passes inside and ability to hit the mid range jumper.

Best player you haven't seen

Obrazek

In the first half of the season, Tel Kabir got blown out week after week and didn't look like they belong in division 1. And then, Christina Ciocan arrived. The Romanian bosman got the team to play together, and they set out on a desperate race to try and stay in the league. Since Ciocan arrived the team won three games, and got very close in four other games against the top teams. She has great court vision and excellent ball handling for her height, and she can play as a guard or a forward. Ciocan's great ability wasn't enough for Tel Kabir to stay in D1 this year, but should be enough for her to find a team in D1 in our league or in Europe next season. She finished with 14.9 points, 5.6 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game.
