Texas signs Daria Mieloszynska from Illinois Central Junior College
AUSTIN, Texas -- University of Texas women's basketball head coach Jody Conradt announced Wednesday the signing of 6-2 forward Daria Mieloszynska (Poznan, Poland/Public School), a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-American, to a National Letter of Intent for the upcoming 2004-2005 academic year. Mieloszynska just completed her second and final season at national basketball powerhouse Central Illinois College, a junior college in Peoria, Ill., and she signed with the two-time defending Big 12 champion Longhorns during April's spring signing period.
During her two-year career at Illinois Central College, Mieloszynska (MEEL-ee-ah-zhin-skah) gained 2004 NJCAA All-America Second Team honors and First Team All-Region honors this winter, starring for the 29-3 ICC Cougars which were NJCAA Region XXIV finalists and ranked No. 3 nationally. Mieloszynsk was the MVP of that Regional.
On the year, she played and started 31 of ICC's 32 games, and averaged 15.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and had 113 assists (an 3.6 apg average) along with 2.5 steals per contest. Mieloszynska shot 51 percent from the floor (100-for-197) and sank 80 3-pointers, connecting on 39.2 percent of her shots from long range (going 80-for-204).
Illinois Central won the 2002-03 NJCAA Division II National Championship during her freshman campaign, defeating Mitchell (Conn.) Junior College, 80-67 in the title game. In her two years, ICC posted an impressive 62-6 mark, going 33-3 in 2002-03 when it won the juco national championship for the fifth time in school history under the direction of legendary coach Lorene Ramsey. Ramsey retired after the 2002-03 campaign, and Mieloszynska played for new head coach (and former ICC assistant) Steve Garber this past year.
Texas is coming off a 30-5 season which saw UT post its second consecutive Big 12 regular season title, finish as Big 12 Tournament runnerup and advance to its third consecutive NCAA Final 16 appearance (with a 2002 Sweet 16 and 2003 Final Four showing).
Mieloszynska, who is majoring in kinesiology, is the second signee for Conradt for next season. She joins high school senior and 5-9 shooting guard Erneisha Bailey (Kansas City, MO/Pembroke Hill School), a Parade All-American and Missouri All-State standout and the two-time Kansas City Player of the Year. Bailey signed with UT during the November early signing period.
"Our signing of Daria immediately strengthens our shooting game and gives us needed experience in the frontcourt," noted Texas head coach Jody Conradt. "We found out about Daria later in the recruiting stage this year, yet immediately we identified her as someone who can step in immediately and help us. Daria is our first junior college player since Kenya Larkin, who we signed in 2000 out of Trinity Valley (JC) after following Kenya's progress throughout her Duncanville (Texas) high school career. With Daria, we have a versatile and competitive player and a great three-point shooter. She also is a typical European player who passes very, very well. We are extremely excited to have someone of Daria's ability joining our program this fall."
